calliora: building the AI operating layer for hospital economics

a structural issue

In Germany, two thirds of hospitals are operating at a loss. From 2027, the GKV Contribution Rate Stabilization Act (GKV-Beitragssatzstabilisierungsgesetz) will put further strain on this over-stretched system. It ties audit rates to the quality of hospital invoices: where objections are frequent, insurers may audit up to 100% of invoices, from a previous cap of 15%.

This is where Munich-based calliora comes in: their AI-driven platform sits on top of existing hospital systems and follows each case from admission to case closed, flagging gaps such as uncoded diagnoses or missing evidence before the invoice goes out to the insurer. It connects coding, clinical documentation, case review, controlling and Medical Service workflows across the full patient journey, without replacing any of the applications hospitals use.

our investment

We are delighted to co-lead calliora's $6M pre-seed round alongside Bertelsmann Healthcare Investments (BHI), with additional participation of expert business angels from hospital management and AI, including Dr. Ulrich Wandschneider (former CEO of Asklepios), Sara Siegel (Global Health Sector Leader at Deloitte), Peter Sarlin (founder of Silo AI), and Frank Hutter (founder of Prior Labs).

Hospital billing is a prime example of where AI can have an immediate, measurable impact: the inputs are unstructured, the rules are complex and constantly changing, and every error has a direct financial cost. Yet hospital administration today runs on fragmented point solutions. We believe the value will shift to a unified, AI-native orchestration layer that connects coding, documentation, controlling and medical service workflows in real time, across the entire patient journey.

calliora is building that layer, starting by tackling one of the most complex parts of the hospital: the journey of a case from admission to reimbursement. The company is led by a founding team with a rare depth of knowledge across machine learning, healthcare, and regulatory systems. This combination is exactly what it takes to win in one of the most complex and regulated corners of healthcare.

more efficient operations = more time for patients

calliora's hospital admin is built for quality and scale. The decision always stays with the experts, with coders and medical controllers reviewing and approving every case, and only what is documented in the patient record is billed. The goal is correct invoices, not higher ones.

And the platform is already live in a number of hospitals, and first results show that effort per patient case has dropped by more than half, and over 90% of the gaps found are closed before invoicing. This means hospitals get paid for the care they deliver, face fewer audits and regain financial stability. Healthcare professionals spend less time on administrative work and more time on patient care.

Billing is only where it starts. By bringing together all the information behind a case, calliora can show where hospital operations fall out of step, much like a monitor on an intensive care unit flags irregularities before they become critical. The long-term vision is to build the AI operating layer for hospital economics that takes on routine work, surfaces risks and opportunities early, and brings in human expertise where judgment makes the difference.

the founders: AI expertise meets hospital trust

Founders Dr. Frederik Träuble and Dr. Jonas Wildberger both hold PhDs in AI from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and master's degrees from Cambridge and Oxford. Before founding calliora, they worked together on medical AI applications, and Frederik gained further experience in the AI teams at AWS and GSK.

They are supported by an outstanding scientific and medical advisory board. Prof. Dr. Bernhard Schölkopf is director at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen and chair of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), with academic appointments at ETH Zürich, the University of Tübingen, and TU Berlin. He is joined by Dr. med. Andreas Stockmanns, Managing Director of Kaysers Consilium and former CEO of a major German hospital, who brings more than 20 years of experience in German medical controlling.

As our partner Mira puts it: "Every year, the healthcare system loses billions to administration that helps no one: software that doesn't talk to each other and rules that keep changing. From 2027, every error will cost even more. Frederik, Jonas and their team don't just understand AI; they know how to earn trust in a hospital. We're proud to support them in helping hospitals operate sustainably and giving staff back the time they lose between systems: time for their patients."

what's next for calliora

With this funding, calliora will expand its AI, engineering, and product teams in Munich, and extend the platform across further steps of the patient journey, with the ambition of changing how hospitals are run -  in Germany and beyond. The challenge ahead is the one that matters most in this market: scaling an AI operating layer that healthcare professionals trust and adopt, without compromising on quality .

We look forward to working with Frederik, Jonas, and the entire calliora team as they continue unlocking the full value of hospital care.
